My name is Maria and I am a 20 year old student from Uppsala, Sweden. I am currently on a two month internship for Hunger Free World here in Dhaka. Partly why I came here is because studying development at university it is easy to get an abstract one dimensional picture of development and I consequently felt a strong desire to experience it firsthand. Already, it feels like my horizon has widened beyond my expectations, I have gained endless new perspectives on development, culture, people and most importantly myself. Last weekend I visited HFW branch office in Kaligonj and had the invaluable opportunity to take part of Women Ending Hunger (WEH) annual meeting where women from all the surrounding villages gathered and shared their experiences, successes as well as challenges. Many of the stories were dispiriting of women whom suffered hunger, disease, divorce and more yet others were of women whom despite hardship managed to improve their life and had a new hope of a brighter future. Part of my assignment here is to evaluate the effectiveness of the WEH groups in Boda (Panchagarh district). An internship is a good first step and gives you ideas and experiences that could never be had at home. Apart from the professional experience, coming to Bangladesh is a mind blowing personal experience that will be with you for the rest of your life. |
