The valuable lives lost in the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August, 1945. We must remember the horrible tragedy of these bombings because of the innocent civilians who were the victims of this military action. We must remember these tragedies because we want to ensure that it will never happen again. To keep this this tune, Hunger Free World and Department of Peace and Conflict Studies of Dhaka University (DU) organised a poster exhibition and discussion marking the 63rd anniversary of Hiroshima-Nagasaki Day on 6th August, 2008. Former foreign secretary Muhammad Jamir delivered a lecture on 'Weapons of mass destruction, disarmament and Bangladesh' at RC Majumder Arts auditorium on DU campus. Speaking as the chief guest, DU Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof AFM Yusuf Haider called on the countries with strong military backup to come forward to make the world free from destructive weapons. Expressing his deep respect and sympathy to the victims of the brutal attacks in 1945, Prof Yusuf said all countries should work together to establish a peaceful world for the future generation. Chair of the Department Prof Dr Rafiqul Islam presided over the discussion that was also addressed by Social Science Faculty Dean Prof Harun-or-Rashid and First Secretary of Japanese Embassy at Dhaka Hiroshi O Mora, Program Director of HFW Mr. Mahmudur Rahman Tuhin, Youth development officer of HFW Mr. Murk Hunn. Hunger Free World has been jointly organizing this event from the last two years to inspire our students. Let us work together apart from anger, terrorism, and war, it seems not only sensible but morally responsible to support the only peace by all means. |
